Dear Friends … I’m now on my final countdown to completing my 6th and final year as CEO at MaRS Discovery District, and my 3rd attempt at retirement.
As I reflect on my experience, I am left with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Leading MaRS has been one of the peak experiences in my life … even more enriching than I could ever have imagined six years ago.
Most of all, it’s been a journey where I have been inspired every day, by seeing the world through the eyes of Canada’s entrepreneurs and my team of brilliant young MaRSians. And being guided through the diversity of their personal life experiences to seek a better world — together.
It’s been an amazing ride, filled with existential headwinds, perfect storms and exhilarating discoveries — just what you would expect on “planet MaRS”.
As a parting tribute, the MaRS Board of Directors, in a gesture that’s touched me deeply, has commissioned the Mission from MaRS Leadership Fund for Climate Innovation. It’s a cause I’ve poured my heart into, and seeing it come to life is beyond fulfilling.
As an entrepreneur, I’ve always believed that the best way to predict the future is to invent it … and this fund is intended to inspire the innovations that create pathways to a sustainable planet for our future generations.
Remembering the wise words of indigenous communities: “We don’t inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” This fund embodies that philosophy, aiming to leave a better world for those who follow.
